The word ‘Megalith’ translated from Greek literally means ‘great rock’ and is a term used to describe the massive stone monuments of antiquity. With only manpower and determination, these difficult tasks are accomplished by the collective united in this feat of pure strength.
When commissioned by the Southern California Brass Consortium to compose a work for their 10th anniversary I thought about how much work has gone into making this group exist and to continually function. Starting a musical organization is quite a difficult task but with the collected efforts of the musicians, directors, staff, donors, loyal patrons and the community in general, the ensemble has grown and flourished for 10 years. It has been a great privilege to perform with the group for the last 8 years as a percussion as well as to serve as one of the staff arrangers.
The Southern California Brass Consortium and it’s 10 years stand as a testament to the efforts of many and the support of a community unified in ensuring that music will always be a valued part of it’s cultural life.
