This 4 minute work was written on December 21st, 2014 which is the Winter Solstice. The Solstice is the shortest day of the calendar year and the music depicts a snowy landscape, filled with sledding, skaters on a frozen pond and children playing in the snow. Many of the colors of the orchestration create a crystalline texture, much like icicles. The work was commissioned by Stephanie Scheibe and the Wabasha Kellogg Music Department and was written to be accessible to musicians ranging from the Elementary to High School and College levels. First Snow was premiered alongside the Winona State University Symphonic Band.
